SUNDAY SWAP 2 : CANDLEs
Just thinking about the candle aisle at the store gives me a headache! I know there are many people who are candle lovers so this is an important Sunday Swap!
Candles are a HUGE source of toxins in our homes. The best solution is to get rid of your colored, fake fragranced candles ( Capri Blue Candle lovers I’m talking to you haha!). But if you enjoy the ritual of burning a candle, let’s talk about less toxic options.
why are Traditional Candles bad?
Traditional candles are filled with chemicals; from the fragrance to the wick itself, each part of a candle contains toxins that are harmful to our health, homes and even our pets. Most scented candles that you find at the store are made from synthetic fragrances.
Fragrance
Synthetic fragrances are known endocrine disruptors and are used as an umbrella term for manufacturers to hide 1000s of chemicals. Synthetic fragrances are responsible for causing hormonal imbalance, migraines, respiratory issues and are known carcinogens. Fragrances are also neurotoxins that affect brain function.
Candles labeled with “natural fragrance” or “plant based” are not better options. Again, these terms are placed for manufacturers to hide chemicals.
The ONLY fragrance that should be in your candles are %100 essential oils, even better if they are organic.
Wax
Unscented candles can still pose a problem if they are made of paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is most commonly used in candles and is a made from the leftover oil from petroleum and coal processing. Even when they are unscented or un-dyed paraffin wax candles can emit volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, and acetone. These chemicals are linked to skin issues, allergies, asthma and are known carcinogens.
Paraffin wax produces soot that is trapped in your air for hours after the candle is extinguished and can penetrate the lungs and bloodstream exacerbating respiratory issues.

Wick
The wick of your candle should also be non toxic. Wicks are often stiffened using pollutants like lead and zinc.
