SUNDAY SWAP 1 : SWITCH FROM PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES TO STAINLESS STEEL OR GLASS
Here’s to my first official Sunday Swap!! Each Sunday I will be sharing an easy non-toxic swap for you to integrate into your daily life! By just focusing on one product a week, my goal is to eliminate the overwhelming stress that can be associated with learning about toxic chemicals in our environment!
This week's swap may be the easiest ever.
It’s switching from a plastic water bottle to a stainless steel or glass one.
why are plastic water bottles bad?
Plastic water bottles reusable or not pose a great risk to your health. Plastic water bottles , even “BPA-FREE” ones contain harmful chemicals that can leach into your water. These chemicals are known endocrine disruptors that negatively affect your hormones and carcinogens.
Plastic water bottles should NEVER be used for HOT or ACIDIC liquids, as this makes the chemicals in plastic more susceptible to leaching.
Not only are they bad for our health, but they are contributing to the global plastic problem contaminating our oceans and environments with “forever chemicals.”
Why is Stainless Steel better?
Stainless steel water bottles are a great option for any beverage. Stainless steel will maintain your drink’s temperature ; hot or cold. There is no chemical leaching. They are also more environmentally friendly as stainless steel is recyclable and have better durability compared to reusable plastic bottles. Stainless steel is also dishwasher safe!
My top recommendations for stainless steel cups and bottles are Yeti, MIIR, and S’well.
** Plastic is not completely avoidable when it comes to water bottle lids. My best suggestion for decreasing leaching risk is to hand wash your water bottle lids. Try to purchase bottles with removable lids , so you can drink straight from the stainless steel bottle!
GLASS is Great too!
Glass is another great option! It is not the best at maintaining beverage temperature, but is completely non-toxic! I love glass water bottles for times when I know I can store my water in a fridge.
Glass bottles tend to have a higher price tag than stainless steel, but are worth the investment in my opinion!
